Mapping Global Warming in America

Public data specialists Enigma have taken an interesting approach to mapping climate data in the USA. In U.S. Daily Temperature Anomalies 1964-2013 they have mapped anomalous hot and cold temperatures in the U.S. over the last 50 years.

Using the temperature data from 90,000 weather stations Enigma worked out the average low temperature and the the average high temperature for every day of the year at locations throughout the country. Using these average highs and lows in temperature they can sift out all but the anomalous data.

Enigma has taken those anomalous hot and cold days for the last 50 years and animated them on an interactive map. A graph beneath the map shows the trend over this time for these anomalous temperatures. The map and the graph demonstrate that the proportion of warm and strong warm days has risen from about 42% of the total to almost 67% of the total since 1964.
